Selga Mence. Selected Songs for Female Choir (19/09/2019)

Among the works of Selga Mence, contemporary composer and Professor at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, choral music is one of the most important components. These pieces are performed widely not just in Latvia, but also on the international scene.

Selected Songs for Female Choir includes pieces written in the past decade as well as opuses from the ‘80s and ‘90s, illustrating the composer’s individual choral writing style and showing off her multifaceted imagery. Here, you can find a cappella pieces as well as works for accompanied choir, including both miniatures and expansive choral cycles. Alongside her Latvian folksong arrangements and songs rooted in Latvian folklore – in which folk melodies weave through the composer’s own closely related themes – a significant place is given to original songs with the words of Latvian poets, as well as works in Latin and Italian.
