Mārtiņš Brauns. Rainis. Daugava (17/09/2019)

Mārtiņš Brauns’ cantata Daugava for mixed choir and piano, featuring the poetry of Rainis, has been released. Rainis gave his epic Daugava (The River Daugava) the name Sērdieņu dziesma (Orphans’ Song); it tells the tale of the Latvians’ fateful river, from Black Daugava to Sun Daugava. Foretelling Latvia’s Singing Revolution, a production of this work was staged by director Valentīns Maculēvičs at Valmiera Drama Theatre in 1988; music for the production was composed by Mārtiņš Brauns. Over the course of time, the songs sung by the actors have gained a new image and evolved into choral pieces. The song Saule, Pērkons, Daugava (Sun, Thunder, Daugava) has become enormously popular not just in Latvia, but also abroad.

Alongside Musica Baltica’s sheet music, the Latvian National Label SKANI has released an album of the same name. The album was recorded by the Latvian Radio Choir conducted by Sigvards Kļava, with composer Mārtiņš Brauns at the keyboard.
